Alien (1979) Remaster and H265 encode project

I decided that the quality of the BluRay of Alien was so bad I had to go and “remaster” it. The result is an 8GB h265 (10-bit) which was produced after denoising the entire movie with some subtle colour correction (not scene by scene).

So what was wrong with the original? Terrible encode using H264, but probably going for speed over quality. No knowledge of proper compression or pre-processing for compression, fine for youtube home production but not hollywood compression specialists. This would be fine for a real-time stream but in my opinion the Bluray is not a professional production.

I’ll probably release it on torrents at some point if anyone wants to revisit this awesome film. If anyone is interested in some technical details:

    • I haven’t, I don’t want to disrespect the content creators or breach copyright laws. I could make a sample set of short clips maybe if you want to see the end results. Not sure if that’s legal but I’ll look into it. Thanks for your interest 🙂
